What will happen in Nordic jazz after post-Garbarek electric experiments?  Will we see a return to the minimalist, free-form, folk music-influenced style of the 70's, or a continuation on the early 00's electro-noise-improvisation path - or something else?

This new acoustic trio, a combination of two Finnish front-line improvisers, Samuli Mikkonen and Markku Ounaskari, plus Norwegian veteran Per Jørgensen, is looking towards new directions for the genre - more meditative, less Western, and definitely less mainstream. The strong interplay and sense of form between piano and drums, developed during years of working together, is brought to a new level by Per as he adds another, more horizontal and vocal layer to the music.

The repertoire, consisting of Fenno-Ugrian folk songs, old Russian psalms and some selected originals, sets a mood for a new mix of sophisticated Scandinavian sounds and more robust yet intricate Eastern soundscapes. This forms the basis for the trio's quest for their conception of 21st century music; their focal point between simplicity and complexity, fury and resignation, tradition and innovation - documented on an ECM record to be released in late 2010.
